The Marine Harvest Group

The group is born from the merger between 3 companies specialized in fish farming (Pan Fish ASA, Marine Harvest N.V et de Fjord Seafood ASA). Marine Harvest is the world’s leading in Fish farming. It produced about 430 000 tonnes of fish in 2007 (in majority salmon). It owns farms in about 20 countries around the world, for example, in Norway, Scotland, Ireland, Chili and Canada.

The Group is listed at the Oslo Market, town where their corporate headquarters are located. Marine Harvest employs about 9000 employees all around the world.

The Group is a member of WWF (The World Non Governmental Organization for the environmental protection and the promotion of sustainable development).

This farming is done with the utmost care for the the natural salmon cycle and the environment.
Continued research into the improvement of salmon quality from roe hatching to slaughter (fish health check, minimum stress, continued analysis of water, controlled feeding, etc.)

For Marine Harvest Kritsen and the consumer, this upstream integration is a guarantee that the salmon is farmed openly.

The salmon life cycle

In order respect the salmon’s natural life cycle, it is farmed for 1 year in fresh water and 2 years in seawater.. It lives in large volumes of running water or in huge enclosures delimited by nets, eaux , in good quality water, which is permanently renewed and checked, in which they have a large vital space The ratio is 2% fish to 98% free water.
This means that they can swim naturally and leap. This physical activity is essential to their good health.

  • Spawning and fertilization of eggs in fresh water (Water T: 8°c) 12 months
  • Incubation of eggs in fresh water and hatching of alevins in fresh water (Water T: between 12 and 14°c).
  • The alevins become “smolts” (small salmon >1 cm).

  • 20 months : The smolts are put out to sea in the middle of the fjord. The salmon grows until it reaches 5 Kg.
